Welcome to The Autoimmune Wellness Podcast Season 1! We’ve created this podcast as a free resource to accompany our upcoming book, The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook: A DIY Guide to Living Well with Chronic Illness.

Episode #5: Step 2: In-Depth with Dr. Titus Chiu is a conversation with award-winning professor, chiropractic neurologist, and functional medicine expert on practical collaboration and the overall collaborative spirit when it comes to healthcare. Titus talks with us about the specifics of collaboration between conventional and natural practitioners, including why the breakdowns in communication often occur. He also shares why he believes there is a new and positive future for a more collaborative healthcare environment. The best part of this episode comes at the end, when Titus talks about the deep root of meaningful collaboration (we wish every doctor approached communication like this!). This episode is awesome for insight into the healthcare experience from the “other side” of the exam table.

If you’d like to go more in-depth on Step 2: Collaborate, check out the “How Do You Build A Collaborative Team” section in Chapter 2. This section is very relevant to the guidance Titus shares in this episode.

Hi, I have your book autoimmune paleo, etc.. I want to ask you about a recipe I found a here, the basil pesto. I made it and though the flavor was good it was very watery and unpleasant. Why did you include 1/2 cup coconut water in the recipe? Was there a reason? I love to cook and recommended your book to a friend but now I’m concerned. Please advise. Thanks. Carmen

      Hi Carmen!
Did you pack a lot of basil into the measuring cup when you made the recipe? I’ve had a few people make it with a very “light” amount of basil and the recipe doesn’t turn out. I’d try again with more basil and see if it turns out for you.

I have really enjoyed your podcasts. They are super helpful when adjusting to the AIPdiet. I was wondering what you recommend for people with seafood allergies? I was concerned about taking seeds out of my diet because I have a very sensitive allergy to all seafood. Do you have ideas how to add omega 3s back into my diet?
Thank you so much for all your work.

    Natalie

Hi Natalie! You should be fine doing the Autoimmune Protocol without seafood as long as you are making sure to get grass-fed and pastured meat. Animals that eat their appropriate diet (like grass-fed cows) have a high enough ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. Nuts and seeds are actually not a good source of omega-3, they contain very high amounts of omega-6. Hope that helps!

    Awesome, Thanks Mickey!!

I recently discovered Dr Titus and Dr. Natasha from an on-line docuseries I now follow their Facebook page. I ADORE their openness and willingness to meet people where they are now and help them on their journey of healing. They are both super-personal and actually answer question on their page and reply to people. Yes, it is all about the relationship between the practitioner and the patient. This is exactly the kind of practitioner I personally look for. Thank you for bringing him to your program. It so important to get the word out to the world that this kind of physician exists and that this is a viable option for many. I have “built” a health care team over the past two years BECAUSE Micky talked about her health care team in an earlier podcast. This was a light bulb moment for me when she explained how this works for her. (Thank you Micky!!) This concept was definitely an “ah ha” moment for me. I now work with a conventionally trained internist who handles my annual blood work, colonoscopy AND is the door opener to the hospital should I need that in the case of a car accident or broken bone for example (insurance pays.) Then I have a Functional Medicine Physician who partners with me on my Autoimmune Hashimotos’ and LS (I pay out of pocket.) Then I have a conventionally trained but holistic leaning MD who acts as my “Primary Care Practitioner” whom I see every three months with my husband (age 74.) This MD implants my bio-logical hormones (I pay for this) and he is well skilled in “aging well” issues and works with me on various relationships as my husband and I age (insurance pays for this.) This system works for both my husband and I.
