Hi, we’re Mickey and Angie, the bloggers here at Autoimmune Paleo. We met in 2012 after guest blogging for The Paleo Mom. We had each recently begun a journey of healing, with dramatic results, using the Autoimmune Protocol. We were both writing, from different sides of the United States, about the experience on our own blogs. The connections did not end there though; we were seeking wellness after wrestling with the very same autoimmune disease . . . Celiac disease (among others!). We quickly found in the other a kindred spirit and began a virtual friendship. In early 2014, after receiving certifications that allowed each of us to offer more resources to those fighting autoimmunity, we finally had the opportunity to meet face-to-face. It was then that we realized our goals, work styles, and individual talents were very well matched.
Over the course of 2014, as the Autoimmune Protocol community quickly grew, it became increasingly obvious to us that growth as individual bloggers was not sustainable and did not model the ideal pace we advocate for managing autoimmune diseases. Our commitment to “walking the walk” was solid and our love for the community had not diminished, but we needed to shift gears. That was the light bulb moment! We decided to combine our efforts and blog together at Autoimmune Paleo. Our hope is to build a community where anyone suffering with chronic illness can seek wellness and feel supported by a wide variety of resources specific to the healing journey.

My journey to the Autoimmune Protocol started as a vegan, having been diagnosed with both Celiac and Hashimoto’s disease. Instead of feeling better after my diagnosis, I continued to suffer many months of deteriorating health until I decided to incorporate fish, and then other animal products into my diet. From there, I made the transition to Paleo, slowly reversing vitamin and mineral deficiencies and greatly improving my health. When I finally found the Autoimmune Protocol, I discovered that those pesky food triggers had been the final piece of the puzzle to making me feel well again. You can read more about my journey with illness (part I, part II, and part III) and recovery (part I and part II).
In the middle of my recovery, I started to blog at Autoimmune Paleo to share with others who were in search of ways to heal their bodies from chronic illness. When my energy returned, I went back to work as a personal chef, helping local families keep their kitchen stocked with healing, nutrient-dense foods at all times. I also enrolled in a program to obtain my Nutritional Therapy Practitioner certification through the Nutritional Therapy Association. As if that was not enough for one year, I decided to write a book about everything I had learned on my journey. In March 2014 I self-published The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, which was the first-ever guide and recipe book for the Autoimmune Protocol.
Today, I live with my husband, Noah on our homestead in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, with our cat Savannah and an assortment of goats, ducks, chickens, and horses. While not developing recipes or teaching about autoimmunity and natural health, I can be found obsessively knitting socks, carving spoons, shooting film photography, or exploring my beautiful surroundings in the Pacific Northwest. I am a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and coach a small number of clients through TPM Consulting. I also serve on the board of directors for Hashimoto’s Awareness, a support and advocacy organization for autoimmune thyroid disease, as well as speak at conferences and events about nutrition and autoimmunity.

My Autoimmune Protocol journey began with an act of desperation. I had been diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosis, Endometriosis, and finally Celiac disease over an 11-year period. I thought after receiving the Celiac diagnosis and going gluten-free I would surely, finally, begin to feel better, but that is not what happened. I actually got sicker in the months following my Celiac diagnosis, ending up the emergency room on a regular basis with inexplicable symptoms. It was during this crisis period with my health that I first learned about Paleo. Fueled by fear, I jumped in and within a week transitioned to the full Autoimmune Protocol. Three days after beginning, I had my first healing breakthrough. The crippling anxiety and panic attacks I had been suffering with for years stopped. That was all the convincing I needed to continue the process of slowly addressing malnourishment due to Celiac and a poor diet and learning which foods promoted or reduced good health for me individually. The physical and emotional transformation was dramatic.
I had been blogging about my family’s life in West Africa for three years, but my autoimmune struggle had ended our adventure overseas. I decided to shift my blogging focus in order to connect with others who were also trying to heal about the emotional ups and downs of chronic illness. Soon my former, driven self returned and I began hosting small gatherings about the benefits of healing diets. The experience was so positive, that I decided to completely change my career. In July of 2013 I enrolled in a yearlong program to obtain my Health Coaching certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I am now a full-time individual and group health coach and as of December 2014 the self-published author of The Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook: Eating For All Phases of the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol, which is a guide, complete with recipes, to each stage of the Autoimmune Protocol and an honest look at the emotional process of recovery from autoimmune disease.
Today, I live with my husband, Dave, just outside Washington, D.C., with our teenage daughter, Maggee. When I’m not testing new recipes or writing about disease and the pursuit of wellness, I can be found surfing “tiny home” websites, reading 19th century literature (Thomas Hardy anyone?), reminiscing about my days as a world traveler or planning the next dinner party with my farmers and other friends. I am a certified Health Coach and work with individual clients through TPM Consulting. I also coach on-line groups through my popular program, SAD to AIP in SIX.
